The Maine Collection

The India Collection

I am foremost a painter, an artist with an enduring love of textiles. An intrinsic pursuit of the art of block printing permeates all aspects of my work. This collection of limited edition textiles is informed by extensive travel, research and study of historical methods and materials, mostly in India but is also influenced by European and Japanese textile traditions. A distinct aesthetic and love of color and detail, clearly visible in my art, (www.antoniamunroe.com) permeates all Antonia Textile designs.

The ancient combination of organic indigo and mud resist, a printing technique known in India as “dabu,” is an irresistible art form. For this process I mix a clay resist, stencil it onto the fabric which is then dipped into the indigo vat. Other dyes such as myrobalan, madder, lac, logwood, pomegranate, marigold and cutch, with their beautiful earthy colors, evoke drifting landscapes over which are stenciled hand-mixed textile pastes. Azo-free (non-toxic) dyes yield brilliant backgrounds and add yet another dimension to the Antonia Textiles palette.

I spend many hours creating motifs and then playing with them to establish an organic layout for each textile. Two distinct collections of my designs emerge here: the Maine collection is dyed and stenciled by our tiny team in my Maine studio, and the India collection is dyed and block printed by master craftsmen and artisans in Rajasthan, India.

Do come see the shop, open by appointment here and brimming with colorful textiles, in Camden, Maine.
